Natick, MA - The #4 Natick Redhawks (26-2, 11-0 BSC) can add another trophy to their 2017 collection as they captured the 2017 Division II Metro Sectional Championship before an electric home crowd on Saturday February 11, 2017 at the Natick High School Field House. The D-II Metro Championship caps an impressive week for the Redhawks as they have now captured three team championships in the past seven days: The 2017 Division II Dual Meet State Championship (2/4/17), The 2017 Bay State Conference Championship (2/8/17), and, most recently, The 2017 Division II Metro Sectional Championships (2/11/17). The #4 Redhawks edged out the #21 Winchester Sachems by a score of 248 - 224 to claim the championship and avenge their second place finish from a year ago where the Sachems bested the Redhawks by a tight margin. The 2017 championship is the 13th overall in program history, and the first since 2013.
Individually, the Redhawks placed an astonishing nine wrestlers in the sectional finals, and had four of those nine crowned as sectional champions: Ben Steenkamp (138), Kyle Bastarache (160), Matt Gastaldo (182), and Josh Atwood (285). Finishing in second place in their respective weight classes were Jeff Marsh (113), Jacob Opella (126), Joe Castellino (132), Jeremy Su (145), and Tim Ramstrom (170.) Alan Smith (152) claimed third place on the day, and Anthony Graves (106) and Ramathan Makayu (220) finished in fifth place.
Looking ahead to next weekend, the Redhawks automatically qualified 10 of their 14 wrestlers for the Division II State Championships (Marsh-113, Opela-126, Castellino-132, Steenkamp-138, Su-145, Smith-152, Bastarache-160, Ramstrom-170, Gastaldo-182, Atwood-285), and will look to add two more as alternates as the week progresses (Graves-106, Makayu-220). The 2017 Division II State Championships will be held at Algonquin Regional High School on Friday February 17th and Saturday February 18th.
